The statute text comes from the Texas Legislative Council’s official Penal Code chapter files, generated April 9, 2026. Those files include changes through the 89th Legislature (2025). Where the Legislature passed conflicting versions of a provision, every version is shown with the Council’s note explaining which act it comes from.

Every reference in the text to another provision is linked: 1,994 links to other parts of the Penal Code (1,078 of them to a specific subsection, subdivision or paragraph), 648 links to sections of other Texas codes, 922 punishment levels linked to Chapter 12, and 1,799 defined terms linked to their definitions.

A reference is left unlinked only when its target is not in the current text. The 9 cases are listed below. Most refer to law “as it existed before” a past date, or to provisions the official text itself mislabels.
